Origin Skin Tone: Pigmentation Correction

Pigmentation can feel especially noticeable on the face, where dark spots and uneven tone may affect how confident you feel in your skin. Origin Skin uses selected laser and IPL treatments for suitable pigmentation, guided by your skin, concerns and long-term skin health.

What is skin pigmentation?

Skin colour is created largely by melanin, the pigment produced by specialised cells called melanocytes. Hyperpigmentation occurs when areas of skin contain or produce more pigment, creating darker spots or patches that may appear as freckles, sun spots, age spots, post-inflammatory marks or melasma.

Not all pigmentation behaves in the same way. Pigment may sit at different depths and have different causes, which affects whether laser, IPL, skincare or another approach is appropriate. New, changing, irregular or uncertain pigmented lesions should be medically assessed before cosmetic treatment.

Common Causes & Contributing Factors

Skin type & genetics

Natural pigment activity varies between people. Genetics and skin type can influence how readily pigmentation develops, how long it remains visible and the risk of pigment changes following inflammation or treatment.

Hormonal influences

Hormonal changes can contribute to melasma, which commonly appears as symmetrical brown or grey-brown patches on the face. Sun and visible light can make it more noticeable.

Inflammation & injury

Acne, eczema, irritation, burns and other skin inflammation can leave excess pigment behind as the skin heals. This is known as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation and can be more persistent in deeper skin tones.

Sun exposure

UV exposure stimulates pigment production and, over time, can contribute to freckles, sun spots and solar lentigines, particularly on frequently exposed areas such as the face, chest and hands.

Expectations & Recovery

Appointment Length

Generally 30-90 mins depending on the number, size and location of the vessels being treated.

Treatment Details

Selected laser or IPL energy is used to target suitable excess pigment in the skin. Some superficial pigmented spots may temporarily become darker after treatment before gradually flaking or clearing as the skin renews. Different pigmentation patterns require different treatment approaches, so settings and treatment selection are based on individual assessment.

Treatment Sensation

Each pulse may feel hot, sharp or like a brief rubber-band flick. Cooling and settings are adjusted throughout to support your comfort.

After Treatment

Temporary redness, warmth or mild swelling may occur. Treated superficial pigment can become temporarily darker and may develop light crusting before clearing. Protect the area from sun exposure, avoid picking or exfoliating treated pigment, follow your personalised skincare instructions and use broad-spectrum SPF 50+ daily. We can recommend skincare cosmeceuticals.

Results & Sessions

Selected superficial sun spots and freckles may lighten noticeably after treatment, although multiple sessions can be required. Melasma and post-inflammatory pigmentation are more complex and may require a longer-term or combination approach rather than laser  alone.

Who is Suitable for this Treatment?

Origin Skin Tone may be suitable for people wanting to reduce the appearance of:

Sun spots and age spots

Freckles and selected superficial pigmentation

Uneven areas of excess pigment

Selected forms of hyperpigmentation
Melasma where light-based treatment is considered appropriate as part of an individual management plan

Not every mark is suitable for cosmetic laser or IPL treatment, and melasma requires particular care because light-based procedures can sometimes aggravate it. Treatment is also not suitable during pregnancy, over an active tan or skin infection, or where medications or other factors make laser or IPL inappropriate. We always conduct an assessment first.

Why Choose Our Approach?

Unlike chemical peels, which work more broadly across the skin’s surface, Origin Skin uses selected laser and IPL technologies to more precisely target suitable areas of pigmentation. Topical creams can also support pigmentation management but are not targeted in the same way, and we can advise on appropriate skincare to complement treatment. For some concerns, microneedling may also be recommended alongside laser or IPL to support overall skin quality and a more even-looking tone.

Comparison of Origin Skin Treatment and Chemical Peels across four criteria. Origin Skin Treatment is marked yes for all four criteria: can target selected individual pigmented spots; treatment can be adjusted spot-by-spot; treatment is selected following a pigmentation assessment; and treatment is designed specifically around visible pigment correction. Chemical Peels are marked no for all four criteria.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Laser and IPL devices deliver light energy that is absorbed by selected pigment in the skin. Depending on the technology and pigmentation being treated, this can help break down or remove excess pigment so the area gradually appears lighter.

  • Sometimes, but melasma needs a different approach from ordinary sun spots. Laser and IPL can be used in selected cases. We assess the pigmentation first and may recommend a broader management approach instead.

  • Suitable superficial spots may become darker during the first day following treatment before gradually flaking or fading over approximately one to two weeks. Do not pick or scrub the treated pigment while the skin is recovering.

  • This depends on the type, depth and extent of pigmentation. Some discrete superficial spots may respond quickly, while other pigmentation requires multiple treatments. Melasma commonly requires ongoing management rather than a fixed number of sessions.

  • It can. Continued UV exposure can contribute to new or recurring sun-related pigmentation, while melasma is particularly prone to recurrence. Consistent sun protection is an important part of maintaining results.

  • Different brown or grey marks can have very different causes, and some are not appropriate for cosmetic laser treatment. Any lesion that is new, changing, irregular or otherwise concerning should be medically assessed before cosmetic treatment.

  • Most people describe pigmentation treatment as brief warmth, prickling or a light snapping sensation. The feeling varies depending on the area, technology and treatment settings used.

  • Most people can continue normal daily activities. Depending on how your skin responds, we may recommend temporarily avoiding excessive heat or strenuous exercise while the treated area is warm or red.

  • Avoid significant sun exposure for at least two weeks beforehand and do not use fake or spray tan on the treatment area. Tell us about medications, supplements and active skincare products you use so we can advise whether anything needs to be adjusted before treatment.

  • Yes. Virtual video consultations are available, and we can often provide preliminary guidance and an indicative quote from your photos before you travel to the clinic. Because different forms of pigmentation can look similar, an in-person assessment may still be required before treatment to confirm that laser or IPL is appropriate.
